Thoughts on John 10
John 10:1-13
Jesus is talking in speech that the common man can follow and understand. Laying a foundation of spiritual truth that overlays with common knowledge. The first part is like saying water is wet. The crowd knows that's how sheep act. But to the Pharisees with their high and mighty, our hands can't get dirty, you are below us attitude can't see (pun intended) and understand. Jesus then expands on the foundation that He is the Door, the entrance, the way to GOD. He even states in plain language that he gives up his life for the sheep. I think that verses 12-13 are a jab at the Pharisees and a reminder of where priorities should lay. We have to be cautious of the hired hand that is in ministry for the perks, glory, money, etc as they will bolt at the first sign of trouble. I think it is also a reminder that our faith is to be in Jesus and not man.
John 10:14-21
He KNOWS us. If that isn't a humbling thought I don't know what is. Sometimes I feel I don't even know myself much less someone else knowing me for what is truly in my thoughts and intentions. Verse 16 speaks to his gathering of the Gentile nations and our place as equals with those coming from the Jewish nation. He continues to prophesy his death and resurrection. Once again Jesus is dividing the crowds and both sides of the argument are using logic to argue their position but not spiritual insight. Do we not also tend to try and lean on our own understanding to explain things from the Word. Trust in the LORD with all thy heart, lean not on your own understanding but in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path. Proverbs 3:5-6. I was raised KJV and that's how verses come out when they come from memory.
John 10:22-30
The Jews like their feasts. It's like a constant party. Jesus literally shows us walking in the valley of the shadow of death as he is yet again back in the temple. Would we be willing to walk back into a place that has threatened death the last 2 times we walked through? Once again the subtext here indicates that the Pharisees are trying to incite the people against him. Bear in mind that the Romans do not put up with rebellions at all. They are put out with extreme prejudice. Jesus is done with their prattle and basically says the exact same thing to them, almost like, "are you all dense and unable to comprehend a simple truth." How many times are we blockheads in the same fashion ignoring the simple truths laid before us. Verse 28,29 should be a bedrock for our faith, We have eternal life, we will not perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand. To put in Drew's terms, "My Daddy done give them to me and ain't nobody taking them away." We are in the Father's hand.
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand,
And covers me there with His hand.
John 10:31-39
Jesus is in the temple grounds and they pick up stones again, I don't know that I would go to church if there was literally piles of stones around ready to kill people. I mean come on. I think in verse 32 Jesus is goading them a bit now. Trying to get them to think through their response. How quick are we to react without thinking through the whole situation. How quick are we to judge base on a surface reaction. The little "gods" here is more of position of authority. He is referring to is a quote from Psalms, He uses the Word to counter their argument. One should also note that passage is in reference to GOD setting the little "gods" in their place and scolding them. Jesus then goes on to argue that they were to receive the Messiah from GOD and now that he is here you want to destroy him and even says, hey, if you don't believe Me and My words then believe the actions. He doubles down with a closing "I am." Once again Jesus escapes their plans. His ways are not our ways. If Jesus was rejected, discounted and not believed we should expect the same to occur to us for is servant greater than the master?
John 10:40-42
Jesus' blatant disregard for the Jewish festivals has got to be infuriating to the Pharisees, The Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) was a newer celebration that was instituted after the Syrians desecrated the temple before the Romans took power. Jesus walks out the temple and goes off to the Jordan and camps out teaching. IN JOHN THE BAPTIST'S SPOT. The sheer tenacity and boldness of it. The people being the fickle thing they are go "Hey, John was a cool cat, he never did any works but he didn't lie about this man Jesus" I also take from this that "prime location" is not were ministry truly occurs. We have this idea that church is where people have to come to be reached. That is the very opposite of what Jesus did, Paul did, John did. Oh, how Satan has deceived the church.
